God is faithful in His promises. Is that something that you find difficult to believe? I know for me it can be. Some of the promises can seem contradictory – how can Jesus promises us a gentle, easy yoke while also promising trouble in life, and that people will hate me because of what I believe? How can Jesus promises that if I believe even a little, I can move mountains when I pray, and yet I don’t receive everything that I pray for, even when I’m sure I have a lot of faith? What’s up with that?
I was baptized at my church on Sunday, and boy, was it an experience! I’ve rewatched the video, and it gives me a lot of hope. It’s like a wedding knowing that Jesus is never going to leave me, and I don’t think you know how much that quenches my soul of the insecurities I’ve been having about my worth and lovability. It’s been a whole new world of being called to do things I don’t want to do (let go of anger toward those I’m frustrated with, trust God AGAIN with some pretty devastating financial news, admit to a lie that I told even though it didn’t seem like a big deal, get off my butt and start doing my work again.) Everyone keeps asking me whether I feel different. One of my pastors told me how someone who she saw baptized actually felt some sort of electricity after she came up from the water. Me? I just felt wet. A little dazed. To be honest, the whole thing was a blur. It really did remind me of my wedding, in a way. SO MUCH CHAOS! So many things were going wrong. The pastor who was supposed to do my baptism, the one who’s been walking with me for over a year in patience and love as I went up and down and back and forth in my faith, couldn’t come because she had COVID. I got up early and made sure that I was early for my first bus, which I always struggle with. But that bus was late! Of all days! It finally came, and I thought I might just barely make it to my connecting bus if I hurried and didn’t get lost, but what do you know, when I got there, the bus stop was closed due to construction. I had to get to the next stop about five blocks away before the bus reached it. At this point I was praying that it would be late, so that I would at least have a chance. So maybe that’s why my first bus was late? Whoever needed it to be late that day, I hope things worked out for you!
Blessedly, I arrived at the other bus stop, and then had to wonder whether I had missed it or whether it was still on its way. It was REALLY late! So late that I was definitely going to be late to church, since I needed to be there early for the baptism rehearsal. It was a moment of really diving into my worship music to avoid a mental breakdown. I was just going to have to get down the hill as fast as my legs could take me, but you know what? A third bus came. One that stopped for me at the top of the hill where he didn’t have to (and really wasn’t supposed to) and picked me up, even though I was only going one stop, because he saw I was walking where there was no sidewalk and kind of struggling in the ice and snow and mud. He took me down the hill in thirty seconds, saving me a five minute walk when I was going to be two minutes late, and I ended up being four minutes early. I told the man he was an angel and went off on my way to be buried with Christ.
A lot of people might say that was just a coincidence. Maybe I was putting calm vibes into the universe and manifested the third bus, and the kindness of the that bus driver. But there are a lot of little things in my life that I get so anxious over, and then things turn out okay in pretty unexpected ways. Not because of anything I did. And it’s things like that which I try to remember when I get confused about what I read in the Bible or what a trusted Christian leader tells me. I remember that Jesus’ light yoke is what helps me walk on the waters of these storms, and that I can trust in his small and big miracles, even if I have yet to defy the laws of physics. In today’s our Daily Bread reading, Jesus prayed in Matthew 26 for God not to let him drink from the cup and be crucified, if it was possible. Jesus knew what the plan was, even that he wouldn’t stay dead for long, but it didn’t make it any easier to handle.
I know sometimes I’m praying for things that just aren’t in God’s plan and don’t even know it. That can be hard to accept, but with hindsight, I’m sure we’ll be grateful that things didn’t go our way.
Try to spend a bit of time in the word every day! It will be amazing, confusing, uplifting, perplexing, and at times disturbing – just like life, and so much better when you’re holding God’s hand.

- Believing is Not BelievingMoses loved his people a lot, despite the grief that they caused him. Sometimes he complained to God in the same way that they did, asking why He doesn’t just kill him. But despite those words, Moses’ actions still demonstrate the love he had for the Israelites. I was struck in this reading by how Moses apparently spent forty days praying for them so that God wouldn’t destroy them. Have you ever spent forty days praying non-stop? Has anything ever been that important to you, that you would drop everything just to pour out to God? Not me. Those are some actions I can’t even fathom.

- Following God is a Mistake, Don’t Do itJesus was perfect, and that perfection included questions and sadness and a wish that things could be different. But He still took God’s hand, crying and shaking though He was, and walked on. Just like Peter. In Matthew 14, he sees Jesus walking on the water. Everyone else on the boat is like, “Wtf?” and Jesus is like, “Yo, it’s your homeboy. Stop stressin.” And Peter’s like, “Bro, you trippin. If it’s REALLY You, tell me to come roll with ya.” And Jesus is like, “Dude.” And Peter was like, “Dude!” And then he saw the waves, and was like, “dude….” And Jesus saved Him, and is like, “Dude. Seriously?”
