#28 Taken

You took our happiness, smiles and our joy
What you couldn't take, you simply destroyed
But you took something above everything else
You took us from each other, you took us from ourselves.

You took our dignity, and then you gave us yours
You closed all our hearts and burned all open doors.
We might not all know it, but our "family" is extinct
The "situation" is worse than we let ourselves think.

I've looked and I've looked! I just can't find myself
People turn deaf ears to all my cries for help
You took the big picture and shattered it before our eyes
You made us watch the flame of hope flicker out and die.

But the flame still smolders, under our tears and broken dreams
Because we've learned through what we've lost that nothing's what it seems
You've done something more than evil, what the devil wouldn't do
You destroyed our ability to see what's a lie and what is true.

I really need to find myself and know just who I am
I don't want to live my days wondering if I'll get me back again
People on the outside don't know what's going on within
We're hanging from our fingernails from straws that are too thin.

You have made a difference
And you couldn't leave your mark;
You have taken everything.
There's nothing left to scar.

  1. Remember: Even if it never gets physical, or if it does but it doesn’t leave damage, or it did but only one time, or it’s more than once but otherwise things are pretty good, or if they are actually pretty bad and it makes sense why things get tense sometimes, it is not okay. If someone is managing their own chaos by creating chaos for you, that’s not okay. Whether they are constantly nitpicking and criticising you, or keeping you from seeing your friends, or they barge in screaming at you for something simple, or they beat you until you’re in the hospital, it’s not okay. And you don’t have to be quiet because “it’s not that bad,” or “it could be worse,” or “others go through more.” You don’t deserve the bare minimum. You deserve good that keeps getting better through the ups and downs. You don’t deserve for “small” incidences to be brushed off, because that’s how they get worse, and bigger, maybe not for you but for the next person.
