#104 The BC Fires

Smoke like mist hanging low on the ground
Smoke like clouds in the sky
A blurry reflection, beyond recognition
The world is burning down
The trees on the far shore are dancing
The trees on the near shore are black
The lake in the middle is so, so pale
Everything's covered in smoke
Houses so close, yet invisible
The valley is a great big bowl
Everything colourless, just like a dream
Swallowed up one at a time
Sirens! Sirens! Blasting sirens!
Yet the water remains calm
The ghosts stop dancing, the curtain lifts
And yet all is still pale
The sun has come out, just to finish the job
I suppose that's just as well.

  1. These fires are basically an annual thing, like in California. I wrote this about ten years ago, and I just got to it today, three days into the current smoke warning. I pray for the people of BC and everyone who has breathing problems because of this smoke
